U.S. Begins Transfer of Thousands of ISIS Detainees from Syria to Iraq
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the commencement of this major operation in an official statement on Wednesday. The process began with the first batch of 150 detainees being moved from a facility in Syria’s Hasakah province to Iraq.
According to the CENTCOM statement, up to 7,000 ISIS detainees could eventually be relocated from Syria to Iraqi-controlled facilities. The objective of the transfer is to bolster the security of detention sites and prevent a resurgence of extremist groups. CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper stated, "The United States is working in close coordination with regional partners, including Iraq. Iraq’s role in ensuring the enduring defeat of Daesh is commendable."
In a related development, Tom Barrack, the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria, clarified Washington’s stance on the current situation. He emphasized that the U.S. priority in Syria is now the restoration of national unity and regional stability. Addressing concerns about the geopolitical landscape, he explicitly stated, "The United States does not support any form of separatism."
Analysts suggest that moving detainees from Kurdish-controlled regions in Syria may help alleviate diplomatic tensions between the U.S., Turkey, and Iraq. However, significant debate remains regarding whether housing such a large number of high-risk prisoners in Iraq will pose long-term security challenges for the region.
