Russia Hit by Worst Snowfall in 130 Years
The severity of the snowfall is such that ice layers ranging from 10 to 40 feet have accumulated in various settlements. In many areas, buildings have been buried under snow up to the fourth floor. Reports of casualties have emerged due to building collapses under the weight of heavy snow and localized avalanches. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Mayor Evgeny Belyaev declared a state of emergency in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative center of Kamchatka, on January 15. According to the Mayor, the failure to remove snow from rooftops in a timely manner has significantly increased the loss of life and property.
This massive natural disaster has completely cut off road communications and forced the cancellation of numerous international and domestic flights. Many families are enduring dark and freezing conditions due to widespread power outages. With schools, offices, and businesses closed, public life has come to a standstill. The blockage of roads has prevented freight vehicles from moving, leading to a severe shortage of daily essentials like bread, milk, and eggs in shops. Meteorologists warn that this hostile weather may persist for several more days.
