In a recent interview with Politico, Donald Trump stated that "it is time for a change in Iran’s leadership." He referred to Khamenei as "ill" and hinted at moves to oust him from power. Trump’s comments immediately triggered a fresh wave of tension across the Middle East. Responding via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Masoud Pezeshkian wrote, "An attack on our Great Leader is a declaration of war against the Iranian people." He made it clear that Iran would make no compromises regarding the country's sovereignty or the honor of the Supreme Leader.

President Pezeshkian also directly blamed the United States and its allies for Iran's currently fragile economic state. He asserted that the financial hardships faced by ordinary Iranians today are the result of the U.S. government’s "inhumane sanctions" and long-standing hostility. According to him, this economic warfare was imposed specifically to hinder Iran’s development.

The diplomatic friction follows a period of significant domestic unrest in Iran. Widespread protests over the rising cost of living began on December 28. In early January, these demonstrations turned violent, and government sources indicate that approximately 5,000 protesters were killed during security operations. While Khamenei has blamed Trump’s "incitement" for the loss of life, Trump maintains that the Iranian regime is indiscriminately killing its own people. This escalating war of words between Washington and Tehran has now heightened fears of a direct military confrontation.
