The accident took place near the town of Adamuz when a high-speed train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed and collided with another train approaching from the opposite direction on an adjacent track. The impact caused both trains to derail, resulting in severe structural damage. There were roughly 400 passengers on board at the time of the collision, many of whom have been hospitalized with critical injuries.

Andalusia’s emergency services reported that 73 individuals were transported to hospitals, including 24 who remain in serious condition. Rescue teams noted that extracting bodies and survivors from the mangled wreckage was an extremely hazardous operation. In the immediate aftermath, rail services between Madrid and Andalusia were suspended, and they are expected to remain closed through Monday.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences, stating that the nation is enduring a "night of profound pain." Transport Minister Óscar Puente described the accident as "extremely unusual," though formal investigation results have yet to be released. Officials indicated that a full technical inquiry into the cause of the collision could take at least one month.
