US Forces Kill Top Al-Qaeda-Linked Leader in Syria
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees operations in the Middle East, confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday, January 17, as reported by Reuters.
According to the CENTCOM statement, Bilal Hassan al-Jasim had direct communication with an ISIS gunman involved in the December 13 attack near Palmyra, Syria. That attack resulted in casualties among both U.S. and Syrian partner forces.
"The death of a terrorist linked to the loss of three American lives sends a clear message: the United States will not hesitate to take decisive action against those who target our forces," said Admiral Brad Cooper, Deputy Commander of U.S. Central Command.
Following the December 13 incident, the U.S. military has launched a series of continuous operations against ISIS targets in Syria. CENTCOM reported that strikes have been carried out against more than 100 ISIS-linked targets to date.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth echoed this stance on social media, sharing the CENTCOM statement on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption: “We will never forget, and we will never stop.” Analysts view his comments as a reflection of the United States' hardening position on counter-terrorism operations in the region.
