Trump Interested in Settling Egypt-Ethiopia Dispute
In the letter, which he also shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated: “I am ready to resume U.S. mediation to ensure a responsible and permanent solution to the dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia over the sharing of Nile waters.”
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which began construction in 2015, was officially inaugurated on September 9 (2025). Ethiopia views this $5 billion project as vital for its economic development. On the other hand, Egypt claims that the dam violates international agreements and could create risks of droughts and floods for the country—allegations that Ethiopia has rejected.
Previously, Trump has praised President el-Sisi on multiple occasions. In October, during the signing of an agreement related to the Gaza crisis, he expressed support for el-Sisi and publicly voiced his alignment with Cairo’s concerns regarding the Nile’s water.
Analysts believe that Trump’s mediation offer could add a new dimension to bilateral talks and create a possibility for a permanent resolution to the long-standing conflict over the Nile’s waters.
