"The protests in Iran cannot be separated from the long-standing state-imposed restrictions on women's freedom," Malala stated. She highlighted that for decades, Iranian women have faced systematic gender-based control and surveillance. According to her, the future of Iran should be shaped by the leadership of its women, not by external forces or oppressive rulers.

Ongoing Crisis and Casualties: The unrest, which began in late December following a record drop in the value of the Rial and rising inflation, has now spread to nearly 187 cities. While the Iranian authorities blame foreign entities for instigating the chaos, human rights organizations report a dire situation on the ground.

According to Reuters, an Iranian official claimed today (January 13) that nearly 2,000 people have died during the unrest, attributing the deaths to "terrorists." However, Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported a lower figure of 646 deaths, including 505 protesters. The organization also noted that over 10,721 individuals have been detained as the protests continue across 31 provinces.
