According to a report by Reuters, The Gambia's Justice Minister, Dawda Jallow, stated that the Myanmar state deliberately embarked on a mission to destroy the community.

During the proceedings, Minister Jallow told the judges that the Rohingya were ordinary people who dreamed of living with peace and dignity. However, Myanmar’s military campaigns stripped them of those dreams, transforming their existence into a "nightmare" through unimaginable violence and devastation.

The case, filed by The Gambia in 2019, stems from the 2017 military crackdown in Rakhine State that forced over 700,000 Rohingya to seek refuge in Bangladesh. Currently, Myanmar faces dual challenges: defending itself against genocide charges internationally, while grappling with widespread internal armed resistance following the 2021 military coup that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s government.
