Inflation Surges Beyond 9% Again: Cost of Living Crisis Deepens
According to the latest data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), inflation rose to 9.04% in April, up from 8.71% in March. Despite being slightly lower than the same period last year (9.17%), the month-on-month upward trend is a cause for concern.
The BBS report highlights that non-food inflation hit a staggering 9.57%, driven by increased costs in transportation, house rent, and utilities. Food inflation also saw an uptick, reaching 8.39%. Experts attribute this surge primarily to the recent hike in fuel prices (diesel, petrol, and octane) on April 19, coupled with global market instability fueled by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Crucially, the national wage growth rate remains at 8.16%, failing to keep pace with the 9.04% inflation rate. This gap is eroding the real income and purchasing power of low- and middle-income families. While rice prices remain relatively stable, the cost of essentials like fish, meat, and vegetables continues to climb, severely impacting the quality of life for the general populace.
